Generally, final expense insurance costs more than a term policy but less than a guaranteed-issue policy. A smaller policy is cheaper than a large one, and a longer payment term means a lower monthly amount. Most of my Ontario clients set aside $10,000 to $20,000 and, spread over a longer term, pay a monthly amount in the range of a phone or internet bill. Final expense policies are generally designed to cover funeral costs, but the funds can be used for many different things: paying off debts, covering the cost of repatriation to your home nation, the fee to rent a hall or catering for a reception, extra money for your executor or loved ones, a gift to a charity you support, and more. The main limitation is that the policy must fit the insurer's rules and the amount you choose.

Unlike regular life insurance, your final expense policy can pay out directly to the funeral home at the time of need. Your family won't have to handle money or deal with a waiting period at an emotionally difficult time. The policy can also grow on a tax-advantaged basis and could potentially pay out more than you pay in. Premiums are locked in for the term you choose and will not change after the policy is issued. A prepaid funeral contract is an agreement with a specific funeral home for specific goods and services, and the money is tied to that provider. This insurance lets you decide which funeral home receives the funds, you can change that decision later, the money may grow on a tax-advantaged basis, and anything left over goes to your beneficiary rather than back into a service package.

Most final expense plans do not require a medical exam. There is no needle, no doctor's appointment, and no fasting. Some plans ask a few simple health questions during the application. Is my plan protected if the underwriter declares bankruptcy?

Yes. Canadian life and health insurance policies are protected by Assuris, the independent not-for-profit organization that safeguards Canadian policyholders. If an insurer becomes insolvent, Assuris provides protection so eligible benefits continue to be covered up to applicable limits.

I already have a life insurance policy, is a final expense policy worth considering?

Yes. If you already have life insurance, a final expense policy can still be worth considering for a few reasons. Most life insurance policies have a waiting period before paying out, sometimes as long as 90 days, while the policies I offer pay out immediately. Standard life insurance policies pay out to your beneficiary first, and then your family has to handle the funeral bill themselves. The policies I offer deal with the funeral home first, so your family does not have to think about it, and anything left over goes to your beneficiary. If your current insurance is a term policy, it ends at the end of the term, whereas a final expense policy covers you for life. And if you are covered through work, the vast majority of the time once you retire, are fired, or change jobs, you lose that coverage.

How does the payout actually work?

When the time comes, your family mentions the plan to the funeral director and the funds can be paid directly to the funeral home to cover the arrangements. Any money left over may go to your named beneficiary tax-free, depending on your situation and tax rules. There are no receipts to submit and no waiting for an estate to be settled.
